“Mezzina’ – If it is true – and I am convinced of this – that the history of small objects is indispensable for the composition of the big story, the ‘mezzina’ was an artefact that tells us so much about peasant civilisation: Copper jugs ‘pe’ pigliare l’acqua da’ pozzi’ (to take water from wells) were present in every peasant home, when ‘l’acqua ‘n casa la non c’era’ (there was no water in the house); the wells from which to get water were often far away and many hands – especially women’s – were marked by the carrying of mezzine mats, indispensable for stocking up on a vital commodity: water.
